Horley Strollers Sunday 19th August, Friendly

19/8/2018

Blackboys 162 all out, Horley Strollers 130 all out.

Horley Strollers, with a mixture of youth and experience in their ranks, travelled to Blackboys and won the toss putting the hosts into bat. Horley started off well with plenty of wickets taken, including four for Stewart Warren from his eight overs, three for Dave Childs from his six overs and two for 13-year-old Alex Field – his first wickets in senior cricket.
George Byles-Wilding also took one wicket and special mention is due to 11 year old Bailey Warren who kept wicket and took two stumpings, one off his colts team-mate Field, and a catch off his dad Stewart’s bowling.
Having bowled Blackboys out for 162, Horley started their reply well with 14-year-old Christian Kelly hitting 29 off 30 balls.
However when he was out a steady fall of cheap wickets followed. Byles-Wilding scored 19 and Stewart Warren hit an impressive 42 before finally being bowled out. Unfortunately this left the Strollers a few runs short and the game went to Blackboys.

Horley 2nd XI Saturday 18th August, Roehampton, Surrey County League 2nd XI Division One

18/8/2018

Roehampton 2nd XI 152-6 (22 overs), Horley 2nd XI 148 all out (41.5 overs). Roehampton won by four wickets.

Following a series of successful results, Horley Seconds travelled to Roehampton knowing they still had a chance of gaining promotion, but this week they were beaten by a big-hitting team.
Horley were put into bat on what looked like a ragged track with overcast weather. These conditions and some sharp bowling from Roehampton's Asad Ali and Yasir Ahmed kept Horley openers Salim Nadir and Christian Kelly restricted with both falling in single figures.
The experienced Abdul Razzaq and son Adam were next to the crease and both showed real class with some impressive controlled ground strokes, moving Horley into the 80s before the partnership was broken. Abdul Razzaq made 46 and Adam Razzaq 26, but the rest of the Horley batters struggled with only the experienced Fizal Nadir reaching double figures, 19 not out, as the visitors were dismissed for 148.
Roehampton showed their batting intentions early on in their reply with aggressive play from both openers but neither were a match for the start of a superb spell from Horley's opening bowler Tom Livermore.
The openers fell for 14 and 13 but number three Sacha Hatteea gave only one half chance when he was on nought and went on to make 70 not out.
Horley were still in the game thanks to the impressive strike bowling of Livermore, who finished his allocated overs in one stretch with figures of nine overs, two maidens, four wickets for 30 runs. However, Roehampton continued with their aggressive approach and chased down the target in just 22 overs. Number seven Babar Mahmood hit a quick fire 30 off seven balls before being trapped by the canny Horley skipper Darren Croft, who had earlier removed the number five for just one run.

Horley Under-13s Monday 13th August, Sussex Junior Cricket Festival

13/8/2018

Horley Under-13s bounced back from two disappointing defeats to win their last match in the Sussex Junior Cricket Festival Under-13s Shield and finish the week ninth out of 14 teams.
The victory came against Burgess Hill and was the result of a great all-round team performance in the field.
Horley put Burgess Hill in and Alex Field struck twice in his opening spell, bowling Kyle Jones for one and trapping Alfie Lees lbw for four.
Burgess Hill number three Conor Ward was their star batter on the day, making a patient and dogged 51 from 67 balls while wickets fell regularly at the other end. None of his team-mates got into double figures as Horley’s bowlers shared the wickets with Luke Newton claiming two – his first for the club – and Leah Lane, Will Agombar, Ben Stewart, Joseph Barton and Henry Grimwood taking one each and Field claiming a third.
Joe English took a terrific diving catch off Agombar to dismiss Ward and end the Burgess Hill innings on 84 all out after 21.1 overs.
Horley knew they had a lot of overs to chase down the total but Burgess Hill had some good bowlers, so Horley took their time. Opener Evan Grimwood top-scored with 20 from 27 balls, number three Joseph Marshall made 15 not out and saw Horley home with Field, who ended up on 14 not out in the total of 86 for three from 21.3 overs.
It was good for Horley to end the week with a win, as they had been well beaten on the first two days of the festival when several of their regular players were unavailable and they had to call on the best of the talent from the club’s under-11s and 10s, as well as the under-12s who usually play in this team.
On day one, Horley faced Lindfield – who went on to be losing finalists – and were bowled out for 116 in 30.1 overs, with Harry Grimwood top-scoring with 29. Field made 12 and Luke Smith and Hugo Hobbs 11 apiece, but no one else reached double figures.
Lindfield made the reply look easy, making 119 for the loss of just one wicket (bowled by Harry Grimwood), in 18.3 overs. When Lindfield bowled out Steyning for just 17 later in the week, Horley might have felt a little better about their performance!
Horley’s second match was against Barns Green and once again they were put in to bat, this time making 115 all out from 32.2 overs. Smith top-scored with 25, Agombar made a feisty 19, Marshall 18 and Evan Grimwood 14.
Bailey Warren picked up an early wicket in the reply and Evan Grimwood removed the other opener, but Barns Green made 119 for two from 19.4 overs to win easily.
The third match was rained off, and for the last day Horley had a stronger squad available and were delighted to finish the week on a high at Burgess Hill.

Horley Under-14s Sussex Junior Cricket Festival Under-14s Bowl

13/8/2018

Horley Under-14s will contest the final of the Sussex Junior Cricket Festival Under-14s Bowl next month after earning maximum points from their two Bowl matches which escaped the rain last week – and seeing one of their players score a maiden century.
Horley had been due to play on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday but the last two games were a washout for all 12 teams involved in the competition. However, Horley were top of the table thanks to great wins in the first two games and so qualified to play second-placed Rottingdean in the final, which should have been played on Sunday but had to be postponed due to the rain.
Christian Kelly was the star of the show in Horley’s opening win over West Chiltington and Thakeham on Monday 6 August as he hit 101 not out, becoming only the second player from any Horley team – adult or colts – to reach three figures this season.
Kelly’s previous highest score was 53, and the 14-year-old’s maiden century was crucial in allowing Horley to build an impressive total of 262 for five declared from 35 overs.
He opened the batting with Udith Molanguri, who was out for 44. Further down the order Ben Cooper made 41 and Zack Collins 20.
When West Chiltington and Thakeham replied Aryan Patel took three wickets for 13 from 4.1 overs, Bailey Warren took two for 12 from three overs, Collins two for 30 from six overs and there was one wicket each for Freddie Holland, Evan Grimwood and Molanguri.
Having wrapped up that 122-run win, with maximum bonus points, Horley entertained East Grinstead the following day and picked up another 20 points, this time winning by just two wickets.
East Grinstead batted first and were bowled out for 214 in 40 overs. Josh Barrott top-scored with 52, Collins and Cooper took three wickets each for Horley, Grimwood took two and Holland and Molanguri one each.
Kelly made 39 this time before he was run out, Collins top-scored with 58 while skipper Patel made 47. Warren and Shae Meacher saw Horley home under great pressure from a vocal East Grinstead side, with the innings ending at 218 for eight from 36 overs.
This Horley age-group side won the Sussex Festival Shield when they were under-11s, moved up a tier to the top-level Festival Bowl and were the losing finalists in the U13s competition last year and are now through to the showpiece once again.

Horley Strollers Sunday 12th August, Horley Row.

12/8/2018

Eltham 195 all out (34.3 overs), Horley Strollers- 171-8 (40 overs). Eltham won by 24 runs.

Horley elected to field first in the deciding game of a series of three against Eltham.
Eltham’s opening batsmen made steady progress for the first wicket, but then a mix up between them resulted in a great runout from Colin Terry.
A bowling change saw Craig Macfarlane take the second wicket with a great ball which trapped the batsman lbw, and Terry then bowled the other Eltham opener on 49.
Another inspired bowling change from the skipper Nick Waddington saw Graham McNeill take the next wicket and Stewart Warren picked up two more for 12 runs off five overs.
Eltham were six wickets down when Leon Watson was brought on to bowl and a great catch from Terry gave him a wicket in his first over.
Kaine Stephens and Callum Tester then finished the innings by taking the last two wickets, finishing with 1-13 and 1-9 respectively meaning Eltham were bowled out for 195.
Horley’s innings got off to a stuttering start with the first five wickets falling for 55 runs. Waddington and Warren got the innings back on track with an 88 run partnership before Waddington fell on 48.  Warren battled on to get his 50 and his innings came to an end when he was bowled on 56.
Their partnership meant Horley were back in the game and Stephens hit 13 off 16 balls late on, but it proved to be too late with Horley falling 24 runs short and finishing on 171-8 after 40 overs.

Horley 2nd XI Saturday 11th August, Old Cats Playing Field, Surrey County League 2nd XI Division One

11/8/2018

Caterham 2nd XI 149 all out (43.1 overs), Horley 2nd XI 177 all out (44.3 overs). Horley won by 28 runs.

Horley dug deep to bowl Caterham out and maintain fifth spot in the league, 13 points off the promotion places, with 15-year-old Kaine Stephens leading the way by taking his first five-wicket haul.
Aryan Patel and Andrew Burbidge opened the batting for Horley and gave them a good start before Burbidge was caught on the boundary going for a big six.
Zack Collins, from the club’s under-14s, came in at four and batted really well to score a respectable 46 supported by Adam Razak, who was also in good form, but Horley were bowled out for 177 in their penultimate over.
Skipper Darren Croft bowled a miserly opening spell, going for just 23 runs from nine overs, while Stephens was picking up his wickets at the other end. Horley bowled Caterham out well short of the target and are 29 points ahead of the sixth-placed team in the league.

Horley 2nd XI Saturday 4th August, Horley Row, Surrey County League 2nd XI Division One

4/8/2018

Horley 2nd XI 187-3 (32.2 overs), Godalming 2nd XI 185 all out (45 overs). Horley won by seven wickets.

Andrew Burbidge had quite a match in Horley 2nds’ win over Godalming, taking five wickets and scoring 90.
Tom Livermore made two early breakthroughs and Horley skipper Darren Croft one, to have the visitors struggling. Then, an excellent 114 run partnership from the visiting skipper Nigel Churaman, and Sean Burton saw them recover well.
Some controlled bowling from young Kaine Stephens and Shwetabh Singh stemmed the flow of runs before the introduction of Burbidge changed the momentum of the innings. He removed Burton for 51 and continued to take wickets in an excellent spell of bowling, finishing up with five for 15 off of just four overs.
In the final over Abdul Razzaq took the final wicket as Godalming posted 185 all out.
Horley’s run chase started with a flurry of runs from Dave Hyde, as he took the attack to the spin at both ends, but when he fell, the runs started to dry up and, with Saleem Nadir and Abdul Razzaq falling in quick succession, Horley were on just 37 for three.
This brought Singh and Burbidge together at the crease and through a combination of excellent running and some powerful hitting, they set about taking Horley to the target.
With Godalming dropping several catches, the pair continued to hit boundaries and for the second week in a row it was left to Burbidge to hit the winning runs, with a six back over the bowler’s head, to see Horley to a seven-wicket win. He certainly redeemed himself for the ten overthrows he conceded in the first innings!
This was a competitive, well-fought game between two clubs that are keen to give colts players a chance to play senior cricket and it was great to see so many youngsters on the field and making good contributions to the match.
