Horley Under-9s travelled to Newdigate for their third league game of the season and came away with their first victory.
Captain Alex Mutton put Newdigate in and Horley’s bowlers were let down by a disappointing number of wide and no balls. Ryan Smith was unlucky not to take a wicket and Ruben Money claimed Horley’s only victim with a brilliant straight ball taking out the middle stump.
Wicketkeeper Charlie Webber was reliable behind the stumps to ensure that Newdigate were unable to steal too many singles. They closed their innings with a run total of 306 for Horley to chase.
Riley Hill and Webber opened the batting for Horley with the latter claiming two fours off two consecutive balls.
Ryan Smith and Thomas Hitchman posted a respectable 17 runs between them with Smith also striking two fours, while Ruben Money and Oscar Millard were Horley’s only pair not to concede a wicket.
When Mutton and Finley Jakins came in to close the batting for Horley, they needed to score 18 runs to secure the win. They showed their intent from the start as Mutton hit the first of his three fours from the first delivery he faced. Despite losing a wicket to an amazing one-handed catch, they safely saw out the last few balls to bring home a well-deserved victory.
