Horley Hackers are into the final of the Surrey Slam T20 Championship thanks to a nail-biting last-ball win at Kenley.
The hosts needed seven to win off the last over and in the first five balls of it, bowler Charlie Robins had Ryan Brotherton caught by his brother Jordan Robins and conceded just four runs. That left Kenley chasing two for the tie or three to win from the last ball and Aryan Patel was sharp in the field to get a runout for Horley as Kenley tried to steal a second run, giving the visitors a win which had looked unlikely a few overs earlier.
Horley chose to bat first and Lewis Tomkins (37) and Guy Derham (23) put on a good opening partnership of 74 in 12 overs. Andrew Burbidge hit a quick 18 batting at five, but Horley didn’t quite capitalise on their solid start and made 117 from their 20 overs, with Faisal Khan the pick of Kenley’s bowlers.
When Burbidge caught Khan off Chris Cosham from the second ball of Kenley’s reply and Cosham bowled A Gerrald in his third over, Horley were delighted but B Gilchrist then made 40 to keep Kenley on target. His third-wicket partnership of 50 with Jon Coles (18) looked like it might be decisive but skipper Jordan Robins (4 for 23 from 4 overs) dismissed both of them, thanks to catches by Sam Remfry and Patel, and kept Horley in the game.
Kenley looked like the favourites to win when they needed 34 from the last five overs but the Robins brothers bowled well enough to stop them reaching their target and Horley were the ones celebrating after the exciting final over.
