Horley got their league season off to a fine start with a comfortable win over Churt.
Horley lost the toss and were asked to field first on a softish wicket. The Churt opening pair reached a 50 partnership before losing their first wicket.
After a bowling change the runs started to dry up and Darren Croft took the first of his three wickets. With runs difficult to come by Churt struggled to boost their scoring rate and lost wickets at regular intervals.
Stewart Warren bagged three, including a double wicket maiden to end Churt’s innings. Fizal Nadir and Chris Cosham took the other wickets for Horley, plus a runout from Croft.
After tea, Horley started their innings strongly with a good opening partnership between Sam Bracken and Ben Remfry.
Remfry was out for 13 and Dave Hyde joined Bracken at the crease and this pair took the game away from Churt, scoring freely until Bracken was run out for 58 and Hyde caught for 41.
These breakthroughs came too late for Churt and Horley romped home a comfortable victory for the first league game of the season.
*Horley 1st XI lost by 59 runs at Wandgas in their first league match after promotion to the Surrey County League Division One. Wandgas made 169-7 in 45 overs and Horley fell short in their reply, dismissed for 110 in 38.3 overs.
Next Saturday (12 May) Horley 1sts play at home against Effingham.
