Horley 2nd XI 229-6 (35.5 overs declared), Sheen Park 2nd XI 58 all out (29.4 overs), Surrey County League 2nd XI Division One, Saturday 8 June, Horley Row. Horley won by 171 runs.
A century by opener Andrew Thomas – his first for Horley – helped Horley 2nds kept up their 100% winning record in the league this season as they trounced Sheen Park 2nds.
Horley skipper Darren Croft chose to bat first and his top order made a steady start, making 70 off the first 22 overs. With two wickets down, Matt Gainsford joined opener Thomas and hit a quick 35 from 15 balls, while later on Andrew Burbidge made 39 from 17 balls.
All the while, Thomas had kept the scoreboard ticking over and when Horley passed the 200 mark with him on 98, Croft decided to delay his declaration until Thomas had reached his 100.
After Burbidge was dismissed, Jordan Robins hit a quick 11 and Thomas completed his fine century, ending up on 103 not out from 110 balls. When Robins was caught, Horley declared on 229 for six.
Horley’s opening bowlers, Chris Cosham and Matthew Puttick, kept it tight, with Cosham going for just five runs from six overs. Puttick got an early breakthrough and Horley’s bowlers then skittled out Sheen Park for just 58, with Darren Croft, Gainsford, Robins and Matthew Puttick taking two wickets each and Fizal Nadir one, while Burbidge got a run-out. Thomas, Croft, Anthony Puttick and Burbidge all took catches.
Horley 2nds remain joint top of the league and in the next three weeks will be well tested as they play the other sides in the top four. If they can continue their winning run, they will be in a great position.
