Horley Under-13s Monday 21st May, Horley Row, East Surrey Colts League

21/5/2018

Horley Under-13s 138-1 (20 overs), Capel Under-13s 108-8 (20 overs). Horley won by 30 runs.

Horley made it two league wins in a row with a terrific batting and bowling performance against Capel.
Their opening partnership put on 56 runs, with Harry Grimwood retiring on 32 and Alex Field bowled by Charlie Atkinson for 18.
Leah Lane and Tommy McKenna stayed together at the crease for the rest of the innings, with Lane finishing on 25 not out and McKenna on 15 not out – his highest score.
Rain caused a longer than usual break for the changeover which meant Capel were destined to finish their innings in very poor light. With that in mind, they started their reply strongly and made 29 before Ben Ware was run out by a good direct hit from Field off his own bowling.
Atkinson went on to make 32 before retiring, but Horley were clever enough to keep him off the strike for long periods while they took wickets at the other end.
Bailey Warren claimed two victims, one bowled and one a superb one-handed diving catch from Lane.
Evan Grimwood took the fourth wicket and Harry Grimwood had Joe Collins caught for 10 by Joseph Marshall. Another runout, and a wicket bowled by McKenna left Capel struggling at 94-7 with time running out and the light fading fast.
To their great credit, they battled bravely on in the near-darkness, despite the target being out of reach. Over-excited at their impending victory, Horley let themselves down in the final over by disrespectfully messing about with the field placings. That overshadowed an excellent final-ball, direct-hit runout by Bailey Warren, which sealed a 30 run win.

6/5/2018

Merstham Under-13s 111-9 (20 overs), Horley Under-13s 101-3 (20 overs). Merstham won by 10 runs.

Horley came close to securing a County Cup round one win against a Merstham side which plays in a higher-level league, but were ultimately unable to score quickly enough in the second half of their innings.
Horley put Merstham in and an excellent performance from the bowlers and fielders restricted the home side to 111 for nine.
Adam Swan top-scored for Merstham with 27 in an opening partnership of 41, before Udith Molanguri bowled him. Joe English then bowled Daniel Kite and was the pick of the Horley bowlers, finishing with three for 22 from his four overs.
Ben Stewart and Alex Field both one victim in and looked threatening, and Molanguri picked up a second wicket, caught by Harry Grimwood, who also combined with keeper Joseph Marshall to run out Jasper Parsons.
Tommy McKenna caught Ollie Barkwith for English’s third wicket – just a couple of balls after English had bowled Daniel Botma - and Leah Lane finished the innings with a direct hit runout.
Botma, Zohaib Faisal and Ben Jones all reached double figures in the lower half of the batting order to take Merstham into treble figures and their contributions proved vital in the final analysis.
Molanguri and Harry Grimwood gave Horley a good start in their run-chase, putting on an opening stand of 65 for Horley before Parsons bowled Grimwood after the drinks break, then Swan had Molanguri caught by Jones.
Field and English tried to keep the run-rate ticking along but both found it hard to get the ball away against a very varied Merstham attack and played and missed numerous times. Merstham used all their bowlers and the frustrated Horley batters needed 16 from the last over and were unable to get there.
